Over the week of April 30 to May 04, 2001, Spring Hill Tower was relocated from its home in southern Terre Haute to the Wabash Valley Railroaders Museum, in northern Terre Haute. The Haley Tower Historical & Technical Society hired MCF Construction, Inc. (Newburgh, IN) and White Construction Co. (Clinton, IN) to effect the move, and received aid from Vigo County, the Vigo County Sheriffs Department, Cinergy, and Time Warner in completing the effort. Also, ICE Crane and Rigging provided the crane and operator to reinstall the roof on Spring Hill, for free!

The photos below were taken by me on Monday through Thursday of the move week. They do not show every aspect of the move, but give a good overall view of what happened. If anyone who was present would like to contribute photos to this page, please contact me or the HTH&TS.

Monday afternoon; the foundation has been breached; the tower would be separated from it be the end of the day. (Spring Hill, IN, April 30, 2001)

Steel beams have been installed under the tower and it has been moved a short distance. The foundation is visible underneath. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

A view of how far off the foundation the tower has been moved. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

Building cribbing to support the tower as it moves to the end of the beams. The crank-and-pulley system used to move the tower can be seen at right, connected to a bobcat. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

Looking down into the foundation. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

The rollers that the tower was resting on have been removed, and the tower has been lowered using hydraulic jacks directly onto the beams. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

The jacks have been lowered by a course of cribbing. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

The tower is now being supported on this side exclusive by the jacks in preparation for removing the north beam. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

Break time for the MCF crew. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

The south side of the tower is being supported by jacks so the other beam can be removed. (Spring Hill, IN, May 01, 2001)

A front-end view of the White Construction Co. crane on Wednesday morning. Nothing is happening at the moment because the crane operator's assistant had to return to Clinton for shorter cables. (Spring Hill, IN, May 02, 2001)

A view of the south wall with the beams to support the second floor protruding. These are the same beams that were used to move the tower off its foundation. (Spring Hill, IN, May 02, 2001)

An MCF worker is attaching cables while others look on. The guy in the white hard hat is Bill Foster, HTH&TS President. (Spring Hill, IN, May 02, 2001)

Carrying a shoring beam up to the steel beams; this was positioned between the steel beams to prevent them from trying to pinch together and damage the second floor. (Spring Hill, IN, May 02, 2001)

The crane operator has tensioned the cables -- notice the angle the beams have taken. (Spring Hill, IN, May 02, 2001)

Mike, the MCF crew boss, is discussing the roof with the crane operator. The spreading beam wasn't long enough to clear the length of the roof, so the edges were damaged during the lift. (Spring Hill, IN, May 02, 2001)

Thursday was the big day; the first floor is seen here, ready to move north. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

Something is missing here, but I can't quite figure out what... (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

The interlocking machine on a trailer; I think the top side is the one facing the trees, but a "This end up" sign would be helpful. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

The second floor lined up directly behind the first. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

The last train past the tower was a CSX northbound. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

Immediately after the train cleared the crossing, the CSX foreman on the scene received foul time from J. Hill (SB Desk dispatcher that morning), and the convoy began to move. Leading was Bob's old Dodge with Chris holding the pole in the back. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

Seen crossing the CSX Peavey Grain Spur is the first floor. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

Dr. Bill Eccles of Rose-Hulman was volunteered into driving this MCF truck. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

Next was the second floor. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

Following was the roof. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)

And last was Bill Foster, piloting the interlocking machine. (Spring Hill, IN, May 03, 2001)
