Spring Hill Tower

Second Tower is now at museum site

Formerly situated at the grade crossing of CP's (Soo Line) Latta Subdivision, CSX Transportation’s CE&D Subdivision and CSX’s former Conrail Terre Haute branch (E&I sub) Spring Hill Tower was the last "lever" interlocking machine on the CP when it was closed in January 1999. Once a common sight along US railroads, these towers are now dying breed. Fortunately, the CP Railroad agreed to allow our group to preserve Spring Hill, rather than demolishing it.

The society purchased the building from CP, and our goal was reached in the first week of May 2001 to move the 1910 wood structure, which features a Saxby-Farmer 40-lever rack, to the Wabash Valley Railroaders Museum.

Funding to complete this project is still welcome if our plans are to succeed. We are openly soliciting memberships and contributions from the public to meet our objective. Estimated cost of this project, including the movers, engineering, new foundation, etc. was 40 thousand dollars. The society is also actively working with state and municipal officials, as well as seeking corporate contributions.

We sincerely invite and encourage you to participate in preserving this icon of Wabash Valley and Midwest railroading heritage by becoming a member of the Haley Tower Historical & Technical Society.

The "Latta Laments" , Tales of the CTH&SE by CP Dispatcher Mike Dettmers, is now archived here. This series featured insightful and humorous stories by Mike when he was dispatching the Latta Sub from Springhill.
